British cycling is in mourning. Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old Welsh rider, died on Friday, August 14, following a serious accident during the 8th stage of the Tour of Portugal. The NSN Development Team rider was struck by a vehicle as the race headed towards Fafe. The tragedy occurred during the 166,8-kilometer stage from Melgaço to Fafe. Tarling was at the back of the peloton when he was hit by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on the race route. The young Briton did not survive his injuries.

A vehicle on the race course

Initial reports indicate that a vehicle not involved in the race entered the roadway used by the cyclists, traveling in the opposite direction. The collision occurred just over 20 kilometers from the finish line. The precise circumstances that allowed this vehicle to enter the course will need to be determined. The accident immediately disrupted the stage.

Stage 8 neutralized

Following the announcement of the severity of the crash, the 8th stage was neutralized approximately 23 kilometers from the finish. The riders then rejoined the peloton in Fafe without resuming the race. Finlay Tarling's teammates rode together to the finish, ahead of the main group. No stage win was awarded, and the podium ceremony was canceled.

A great British hope for the time trial

Born in Wales, Finlay Tarling was considered one of Britain's most promising young cyclists, particularly in time trials. He had joined the NSN Development Team and was progressing towards the highest professional level. Just weeks before his death, he had notably finished third in the British Under-3 Time Trial Championships. He had also achieved several notable results on the track and road in the junior categories.

Josh Tarling's brother

Finlay Tarling was the younger brother of Josh Tarling, one of Britain's top time trial specialists and a rider for the Netcompany INEOS team. The Tarling family has a strong connection to elite cycling. Finlay had also begun to make a name for himself in the international peloton and was competing in one of the important races of his young career in Portugal.

The Tour of Portugal struck by tragedy

The Tour of Portugal organizers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed the rider's death last night and offered their condolences to his family, friends, and team. The NSN Development Team also announced the passing of its young rider, who was only 19 years old. Finlay Tarling died during the race, on stage 8 of the 87th edition of the Tour of Portugal.
