Pegasus case: two former NSO executives questioned by French authorities

Two former executives of the Israeli company behind the Pegasus spyware were questioned by a French investigating judge and placed under the status of assisted witness, as part of an investigation opened in 2022. This procedure follows international revelations about the use of this surveillance tool by several States.

The investigation focuses in particular on the targeting of prominent French figures, including politicians, journalists, and members of civil society. Some devices were allegedly infiltrated, granting access to sensitive data, which has led several alleged victims to file complaints.

Responsibilities disputed by the company

The former executives defended their company's position, stating that it did not control its clients' use of the software. However, they acknowledged the possibility of accessing certain information in cases of suspected misuse, particularly to suspend system access.

According to a French intelligence report included in the case file, it is likely that the company had broader visibility into operations conducted via Pegasus. The investigation is ongoing to determine precise responsibilities and establish the conditions under which this software was used in the alleged espionage operations.
