Zendaya Steps into Ronnie Spector's Shoes for the Biopic 'Be My Baby'
Zendaya

The American star will play the Ronettes singer in a film directed by Barry Jenkins and produced by A24. The film promises to be ambitious, intimate, and tailor-made for Zendaya, who is also co-producing the project.

A musical icon, a dream cast

Announced for several years, Be My Baby is finally becoming a reality. Adapted from Ronnie Spector's memoir, the film will focus on a key period in his life: his abusive relationship with producer Phil Spector. Far from the classic biopic, Barry Jenkins, Oscar winner for Moonlight, promises a personal look at the artist, avoiding the pitfalls of a linear narrative. Zendaya, chosen by Ronnie Spector herself before his death in 2022, will lend her features and voice to the iconic singer of The Ronettes.

Alongside Jenkins, screenwriter David Kajganich, known for Bones and All and Suspiria, brings his sensitive and dark touch to this painful story. Together, they aim to capture the emotional richness of a woman marked by violence, but also by musical genius and a fierce will to survive.

A role tailor-made for Zendaya

Known for her performances in Euphoria, Malcolm & Marie, and Dune, Zendaya further broadens her range with this demanding role. Actress, singer, producer: she brings all her talent to bear here. Her musical background—a solo album, soundtracks, and a surprise duet at Coachella in 2023—reinforces her credentials to embody such an iconic figure as Ronnie Spector.

With Be My Baby, she continues her collaboration with A24 Studios and confirms her status as a complete artist. This project promises to be a major new step in her career, at the intersection of music, film, and personal commitment.
