A large T-Rex displayed ahead of a major Sotheby's sale

An exceptionally large Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton was unveiled to the public in New York by Sotheby's, ahead of an auction scheduled for mid-July. The piece, nicknamed "Gus," could fetch a record price for this type of relic, with an estimated value between $20 and $30 million.

Unearthed in South Dakota during recent excavation campaigns between 2021 and 2023, this specimen is distinguished by its remarkable state of preservation. The teams were able to reconstruct 183 fossilized bones, representing nearly two-thirds of the original skeleton—a rare level of completeness for this iconic dinosaur.

A potential record for a dinosaur at auction

Measuring 11,6 meters in length, the animal is among the largest ever identified of its species. Experts also emphasize its scientific significance, linked to the Maastrichtian period, characterized by extensive coastal environments and a climate generally warmer than today.

Displayed in Sotheby's New York spaces before its sale on July 14, this fossil is already attracting collectors and curious onlookers, illustrating the growing market interest in exceptional paleontological pieces.

I can also make you a more “art market” or more “science/paleo” version depending on the angle you want to explore.
