Robert Downey Jr., Stewart and McKellen among the big returns in the "Avengers" saga

Marvel Studios announced Wednesday the names of the actors who will participate in the next installment of The Avengers saga, six years after Avengers: Endgame, which remains one of the biggest box office successes in the history of cinema.

In this new film titled Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for May 2026, the unexpected return of actors Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in the roles of Professor Xavier and Magneto, two emblematic characters of the saga X-Men, was particularly noted.

This return surprised many fans, especially since these characters had either been killed off in previous films or played by other actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, owned by Disney.

Marvel also confirmed the return of beloved actors such as Chris Hemsworth as Thor, the God of Thunder, Tom Hiddleston as his rival Loki, and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man.

The trailer also confirmed Robert Downey Jr.'s on-screen appearance.
However, as announced last summer, instead of reprising his iconic role as Iron Man – who died in Avengers: Endgame in 2019 – this time he will play Doctor Doom, a masked supervillain, a genius scientist consumed by megalomania.

Marvel superhero films remain among the most profitable in Hollywood history, with cumulative worldwide box office revenues exceeding $30 billion.
