A surprise? Not so much! Paris has just been named the second city in Europe offering the most pleasant olfactory experience, according to a recent study conducted by Haypp and relayed by CNEWS. A ranking that may surprise at first glance, as the French capital is often criticized for its urban hygiene. However, by crossing several indicators such as the environmental performance index (EPI) and the number of establishments linked to olfactory pleasures (bakeries, perfumeries, flower shops, candle shops), the City of Light stands out behind Athens and ahead of Zurich. It obtains an impressive score of 8,15 out of 10, in particular thanks to its many bakeries and perfumeries.

A scent of coffee and pastries in the streets of Paris

This ranking is largely explained by the gastronomic and olfactory heritage of Paris. With 11,4 bakeries per 10 km², the French capital is a true temple of gourmet scents, where the scent of freshly ground coffee and hot pastries lulls the daily lives of residents and visitors. Add to this a perfume tradition that is deeply rooted in Parisian culture, with 11,62 perfumeries per 10 km², confirming the city's image as an epicenter of luxury and sensoriality.

Recognition with flair

If Paris stands out in this ranking, it is also thanks to its art of living, where smell plays a key role. From Place Vendôme to open-air markets, from flower gardens to renowned patisseries, the French capital is a true olfactory symphony that seduces as much as it amazes. With an EPI index of 62,5, it even surpasses Athens in environmental terms, although the Greek city takes first place. The top 10 most pleasant cities to breathe also include Dublin, Luxembourg, Nicosia, Copenhagen, Bucharest, Valletta and Amsterdam.
