Nintendo has finally revealed the release date for its highly anticipated live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda. The film adaptation of the cult classic will hit theaters worldwide on March 26, 2027, the Japanese company revealed Friday via its newly released Nintendo Today! app. The project, which has been in the works for several years, will mark the first live-action appearance of Link, Zelda, and the kingdom of Hyrule, more than 40 years after the franchise's inception.
A major ambition for Nintendo
The film is helmed by Wes Ball, known for his Maze Runner trilogy and the recent Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He is joined by producer Avi Arad, a well-known figure in Hollywood cinema, notably thanks to his work on the Spider-Man and X-Men sagas. Nintendo's iconic creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, is overseeing the project himself, having previously worked behind the scenes on Super Mario Bros. The Movie, the colossal 2023 hit.
On the production side, Nintendo is this time collaborating with Sony Pictures to ensure international distribution. No images, trailers, or casting information have yet been revealed, further fueling the mystery surrounding this high-stakes project.
After Mario, Zelda enters the light
The Legend of Zelda saga, born in 1986 on NES, features Link, a young hero in a green tunic, engaged in epic quests to save Princess Zelda and fight against the evil Ganon, in a medieval-fantasy universe combining magic, ancient temples and legendary creatures. With more than 140 million games sold worldwide, including a sales record for Tears of the Kingdom in 2023, it is one of Nintendo's most iconic licenses.
This new film will mark a major milestone for the franchise, which until now had only seen a short animated series in 1989. After the resounding failure of the Super Mario Bros. film in 1993, Nintendo had been wary of Hollywood. But the resounding success of the Super Mario Bros. animated film ($1,36 billion in worldwide revenue) changed that.
A New Era for Video Game Adaptations
The Legend of Zelda project is part of Nintendo's broader strategy to bring its flagship franchises to the big screen while maintaining tight creative control. This cautious but successful shift allows the Japanese brand to enrich its universe and attract new audiences.
While fans will have to wait another two years for this film version, the announcement of the release date is a strong signal. Nintendo now intends to compete with the major studios, and Zelda, the silent icon of video games, is preparing to make her mark in theaters.
