"Downton Abbey" returns to theaters one last time: the third film will be released in September 2025
Downton Abbey

Julian Fellowes' cult saga is about to come to a close. Three years after A New Era, Downton Abbey fans will be treated to a final chapter, expected in theaters on September 12, 2025. Entitled Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, this third feature film will reunite the iconic characters from the British series one last time, including Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, and Laura Carmichael. The announcement was accompanied by an elegant and melancholic poster: it shows Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), from behind, walking through a corridor of the family estate, a flamboyant red dress draped over her shoulders. A symbolic image for this grand farewell, all the more moving as it will also be an opportunity to pay tribute to Maggie Smith, who passed away in 2024.

A final reunion orchestrated by fans of the series

The film, still written by Julian Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis (who already helmed the second installment), remains very mysterious about its plot. Producer Gareth Neame, however, promises a "poignant and celebratory" episode, faithful to the spirit of the series. Many characters will be returning, including Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville), Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), Lady Rosamund (Samantha Bond) and the butler Mr. Carson (Jim Carter). Two more unexpected figures will also be making their return: Paul Giamatti, in the role of Harold Levinson, and Dominic West, seen in A New Age as a charming Hollywood actor.

A tribute to Maggie Smith and the end of a cycle

The passing of Maggie Smith, the unforgettable Dowager Countess Violet Crawley, had a profound impact on the team. The film will devote a special place to her, as Gareth Neame confirmed, explaining that her death gave a new intensity to the storyline. Launched in 2010, the Downton Abbey series established itself as a global phenomenon, winning Golden Globes and Emmy Awards, and attracting a large audience. Its first big-screen run in 2019 was a success (nearly $200 million at the box office), before a second, more discreet film in 2022. With this "Grand Finale," an entire universe is preparing to take its final bow, between nostalgia and British elegance.
