At the Lucernaire, an elegant and vibrant Grand Meaulnes performed by Emmanuel Besnault

Adapting Alain-Fournier's novel "Le Grand Meaulnes" for the stage was an ambitious challenge: to bring to life a deeply introspective and nostalgic tale. At the Théâtre du Lucernaire, Emmanuel Besnault rises to this challenge with a polished and compelling production. Alone on stage, he chooses to tell the story from the perspective of the narrator, François Seurel. This choice allows the audience to easily follow the narrative and remains faithful to the spirit of the novel. For 70 minutes, the actor meticulously unfolds this story of adolescence, desire, and quest, never losing the thread or the audience's attention.

A timeless classic brought to life by a complete artist

Published in 1913, *Le Grand Meaulnes* remains Alain-Fournier's only novel. It tells the story of François Seurel and his friend Augustin Meaulnes, whose lives are turned upside down after the discovery of a mysterious estate and their encounter with Yvonne de Galais. Between a quest for love, aimless wandering, and disillusionment, the novel explores the end of childhood and the difficulty of recapturing the world of early emotions intact. The trajectory of its author, who died at only 27 at the beginning of the First World War, has contributed to enshrining this text in legend. Even today, it remains among the most widely read and translated French works in the world.

Emmanuel Besnault, trained at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique in Paris, belongs to a generation of multifaceted artists capable of conceiving a performance in all its dimensions. An actor, director, and head of the company L'Éternel Été, he has developed a rich career spanning classical and contemporary theatre. This versatility is fully evident in this production of Le Grand Meaulnes, where every element of the stage seems meticulously controlled and carefully considered with a focus on balance.

A masterful performance supported by highly effective staging

On stage, Emmanuel Besnault immediately establishes a precise and controlled performance. His presence is clear and poised, and his deep, measured voice perfectly serves the narration. He delivers the text with clarity without ever losing his way.

The staging effectively complements this interpretation. Variations in lighting, changes in rhythm, height, and costumes infuse the performance with a constant dynamism. This meticulous work avoids any monotony and gives the narrative a truly visual dimension. While the overall effect is harmonious and demonstrates a genuine sense of composition, it lacks only a touch of spontaneity and disorder to better capture the youthful exuberance that permeates the work.

A beautiful moment to experience at Lucernaire Theatre in Paris until June 14, 2026.
