Messi celebrates his 200th cap with a hat-trick
This match already held special significance for Lionel Messi, who was making his 200th appearance for Argentina. It became historic with his hat-trick against Algeria. Algeria stifled, Martinez untroubled
Algeria couldn't find a way through. Trailing from the first half, the Fennecs were overwhelmed by Argentina's superiority without managing to seriously trouble Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine goalkeeper had a quiet evening, protected by a solid and well-organized team. Algeria lacked attacking threat and never really looked capable of turning the game around.
Argentina embraces its status
With this victory, Argentina immediately establishes itself in its group. The world champions launch their tournament with authority and confirm their consistency in the competition. The Albiceleste has progressed beyond the first round in 13 of its last 14 World Cup appearances. This success against Algeria already provides them with a solid foundation for the rest of the tournament.
