World Cup - France's elimination could cost M6 6 million euros
World Cup - France's elimination could cost M6 6 million euros

The defeat of the French team Facing Spain in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup is not just a sporting failure. It also represents a significant financial loss for M6. Deprived of the French national team in the most anticipated and expensive match of the competition, the channel could lose between 5 and 6 million euros in advertising revenue compared to the scenario of a French qualification.

A final without France is much less profitable

M6 will indeed broadcast the Spain-Argentina final live from MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday at 21 p.m. However, without Kylian Mbappé and his teammates, the match's commercial value drops sharply in the French market. The shortfall of 5 to 6 million euros represents the difference between the advertising revenue expected with the French national team in the final and that which a match between two foreign teams would generate. Therefore, this is not a fine or a sum directly paid by M6, but rather additional revenue that the channel will no longer be able to rely on.

Advertising spots divided by more than two

The pre-World Cup advertising schedule reveals the financial importance of a final featuring the French national team. A 20-second spot broadcast during a refreshment break was expected to cost up to €425,000 gross with the French team playing, compared to €250,000 without them. The difference becomes even more dramatic in the event of extra time followed by a penalty shootout. The spot placed between these two periods could reach €500,000 with France in the final. Without the French team, its price drops to €220,000. These figures represent gross rates, before any potential discounts granted to advertisers. The presence of the French national team would also have allowed M6 to charge higher prices for advertising slots before the match, during halftime, refreshment breaks, and after the final whistle. The expected audience would have been significantly larger, and more advertisers would have been eager to be featured around the match.

France-Spain had nevertheless given M6 a record.

Before this disappointing financial news, M6 had achieved exceptional ratings thanks to the French national team. The semi-final between France and Spain, won 2-0 by La Roja, drew an average of 20,244 million viewers, representing 73,1% of the audience. A peak of 22,24 million viewers was recorded at 9:50 pm. This is the highest audience of 2026 on French television and the highest audience for a match since the 2022 World Cup. On beIN Sports, the match also attracted an average of 878,000 subscribers, with a peak exceeding one million. This semi-final generated an estimated €14,9 million in gross advertising revenue for M6. In total, 65 commercials from 58 different advertisers were broadcast around and during the match.

An investment estimated at nearly 120 million euros

M6 is taking a huge gamble with this World Cup. The group acquired the free-to-air rights to 54 of the tournament's 104 matches for an estimated €120 million, not including production costs and the infrastructure deployed in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The channel had considered reselling some of these matches before deciding to retain its entire package. This included all of France's matches, the key group stage fixtures, the semi-finals, the third-place match, and the final. France's run to the semi-finals prevented M6 from facing the worst-case financial scenario. Elimination in the early rounds would have meant the loss of several particularly lucrative advertising slots. However, qualifying for the final would have allowed the channel to recoup several million euros more and further reduce the overall cost of the operation.

The jackpot ended just before the final.

The French national team, Les Bleus, provided M6 with considerable viewership for over a month, but their elimination against Spain deprived the channel of the tournament's most profitable evening. The Spain-Argentina final is still expected to draw several million viewers, though it won't reach the commercial power of a final featuring the French team. For M6, the 2026 World Cup will thus remain a huge audience success, but its financial results will be weighed down by the 5 to 6 million euros in advertising revenue lost with Les Bleus' defeat.
