Canada became the first team to qualify for the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup by defeating South Africa 1-0 on Sunday in Los Angeles. In a tight match, largely controlled by two cautious defensive blocks, the Canadians waited until stoppage time to overcome Bafana Bafana and advance in the competition.
This victory propels Jesse Marsch's team into the Round of 8, a first for Canada at this stage in a World Cup. South Africa, meanwhile, is eliminated from the tournament.
Canada pushes forward, South Africa holds on
The game seemed set in stone for a long time. Canada took the initiative, spending more time in the South African half and trying to stretch the opposing defense down the flanks. Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan, and the Canadian midfielders attempted to increase the tempo, but South Africa presented a disciplined, compact, and aggressive defense in the duels.
Bafana Bafana focused primarily on closing down space and exploiting counter-attacks. Ronwen Williams kept his team in the game, while the South African defense made numerous interventions in their penalty area. Canada had the clearest chances but failed to convert their dominance into a lead during regulation time.
The stoppages in play turned the game around.
Just when it seemed the match was headed for extra time, Canada found the breakthrough in stoppage time. In the 90nd minute, Stephen Eustáquio turned the game around. The Canadian midfielder found himself in a shooting position in the dying moments and placed his shot past Ronwen Williams. The ball sailed past the South African goalkeeper, giving Canada a 1-0 lead in stoppage time. A late goal that sends the Canadians through to the round of 2.
