Switzerland defeated Canada 2-1 in Vancouver on Wednesday evening in the third and final match of Group B at the World Cup. This victory secured first place in the group for the Nati and qualification for the Round of 16. Canada, despite the loss, already in a favorable position, also advances to the next round alongside Switzerland.
The game turned after the break. Ruben Vargas opened the scoring in the 46th minute, before Johan Manzambi doubled the lead in the 57th. Canada pulled one back through Jonathan David in the 76th minute, but couldn't find an equalizer despite intense pressure in stoppage time.
Manzambi decisive, Kobel solid
Johan Manzambi was the standout player for Switzerland. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder from Freiburg scored a goal and provided an assist. His impact was significant in a match marred by numerous technical errors.
In the final minutes, Canada pressed for an equalizer. Gregor Kobel made a crucial save in his own box as the Canadians tried to snatch a draw. Switzerland held on until the final whistle, after seven minutes of added time.
Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Qatar and move closer to the round of 16
In the other match in the group, Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1. This result gives them four points at the end of the group stage and puts them in an excellent position to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. Bosnia's qualification is not yet officially secured, but it is virtually guaranteed pending the results of the other groups.
A success built in two stages
Bosnia and Herzegovina took the lead through Kerim Alajbegovic in the 29th minute. They then doubled their advantage with an own goal by Sultan Al-Brake in the 34th minute. Qatar pulled one back before halftime through Hassan Al-Haydos, who scored in the 42nd minute. In the second half, Bosnia and Herzegovina secured their victory. E. Mahmic scored the third goal in the 80th minute, before being booked shortly afterward. Qatar tried to push forward in the closing stages, but were unable to find a way through.
The final group standings
Switzerland topped Group B after their victory against Canada. Canada also qualified for the Round of 16. Bosnia and Herzegovina finished with four points and await confirmation of their place among the best third-placed teams. Qatar, defeated 3-1, saw their run end.
