From 50.000 to over 6 million subscribers: the incredible rise of the Cape Verde goalkeeper after his incredible match against Spain

Cape Verdean goalkeeper Josimar "Vozinha" Dias became, in just a few hours, one of the standout figures of the 2026 World Cup. With an exceptional performance against Spain on Monday, June 15, the 40-year-old goalkeeper made a significant contribution to the historic draw Cape Verde drew (0-0) in their first participation in the competition.

Making a series of crucial saves against the Spanish attackers, the Desportivo de Chaves player, from the Portuguese second division, frustrated La Roja and allowed the Blue Sharks to secure their first-ever point in the World Cup. Named man of the match, he notably repelled attempts from Mikel Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres, and Aymeric Laporte.

A meteoric rise in popularity on social media

His feat immediately triggered a veritable tidal wave on social media. While he had around 50.000 followers on Instagram before the match, his account surpassed six million followers within a few hours.

Visibly moved after the match, Vozinha confessed to having fulfilled a lifelong dream. "I've worked my whole life for this moment," he told beIN SPORTS. Born in Cape Verde and having played in Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Portugal, the veteran goalkeeper is now preparing to continue his incredible journey against Uruguay on June 22nd and then against Saudi Arabia on June 27th.
