MP Boris Tavernier has introduced a bill aimed at making healthy food more accessible. His proposal would require large retailers to permanently offer a selection of food products sold at cost price, ensuring that their price does not exceed the retailers' purchase cost.
According to the parliamentarian, this measure should allow all consumers to access healthy products, regardless of their income or place of residence. He specifies that the products in question would represent a limited portion of the range available in supermarkets and that distributors would neither profit nor lose money on this entire basket of goods.
A demand put forward by associations
This initiative echoes a demand championed by several consumer associations. In the spring, thirty-seven organizations sent an open letter to the Prime Minister calling for legislation guaranteeing the sale of around one hundred healthy products at cost price in stores.
In a statement released Wednesday, these associations welcomed Boris Tavernier's proposal. They believe the text provides a concrete response to the difficulties in accessing quality food and consider the measure both realistic and feasible.
