Unusual - KitKat launches a "stolen bar tracker" after a truck robbery in Europe

KitKat has announced the launch of a "Stolen KitKat Tracker", a tool allowing consumers to check if their chocolate bar comes from the batch stolen during the spectacular robbery that occurred last week in Europe.

According to Nestlé, the brand's parent company, approximately 12 tons of KitKat products, or 413,793 bars, were stolen from a truck leaving a production site in central Italy bound for Poland. The company stated that the vehicle and its cargo remained missing at the time of its announcement.

To limit the risk of resale through parallel channels, KitKat explains that affected products can be identified using their batch code. Consumers, distributors, and wholesalers can then check if a bar belongs to the stolen shipment and subsequently receive instructions on how to report it to the brand.

In its statement, the company adopted a lighthearted tone, while emphasizing that cargo theft is a growing problem for businesses. Nestlé stated that it chose to make the matter public to raise awareness of this type of crime, beyond the unusual impact of the disappearance of hundreds of thousands of chocolate bars.

The incident garnered even more attention because it involved a new range of KitKats being transported across Europe just days before Easter. The theft, confirmed by several international media outlets, quickly transformed this minor incident into an unexpected publicity coup for the brand.
