Fuel prices continue to soar in France, with a particularly sharp increase for diesel. Last week, its average price reached €2,2158 per liter, an increase of five cents in seven days. This marks the fourth consecutive week of price hikes.
Since the beginning of July, diesel has risen by about 35 cents per liter. For a 50-liter tank, this increase represents an extra cost of €17,50 at each fill-up. The fuel is thus approaching its all-time high of April, when it exceeded €2,31 per liter.
Gasoline prices also remain close to their peaks.
SP95 averaged €2,0659 per liter, SP95-E10 €2,0235, and SP98 €2,0889. These prices have changed little over the past week but remain at their highest level since mid-May. They are now just a few cents away from the record highs recorded in the spring.
This surge is mainly due to tensions in the Middle East and uncertainties surrounding shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. After trading around $90 a barrel, Brent crude fell back to $83,40 following the announcement of diplomatic talks. This easing of tensions could eventually reach gas stations, but its effect will be neither immediate nor guaranteed if the crisis between Iran and the United States continues.
