Alcohol: Local businesses step up the fight against sales to minors

The French Federation of Grocery and Convenience Stores (FECP) has launched a national campaign to reinforce compliance with the ban on selling alcohol to minors. Deployed in 5.000 stores, this operation is being conducted with several retailers, including Carrefour Proximité, Casino, Franprix, U Proximité France, and Francap (Coccinelle, G20, etc.), to remind retailers of their obligations and raise consumer awareness.

Posters and stickers bearing the slogan "Under 18, no way" will be displayed in the relevant aisles and at the checkouts. The aim is also to normalize the request for identification, a step that the FECP considers essential for enforcing the law, but which can sometimes cause tension between customers and employees.

Better-supported professionals

To support teams in the field, the federation provides them with an educational booklet outlining the most common situations, such as disputes, purchases made on behalf of minors, and conflicts at the checkout. This campaign complements the training already offered by the industry and a website dedicated to prevention.

This initiative comes at a time when violations remain frequent. According to tests conducted in 2025 by the association Addictions France in Nantes, Angers, and Rennes, nearly nine out of ten businesses sold alcohol to minors, despite the legal prohibition. The FECP hopes to strengthen the protection of young people, particularly during the summer months when alcohol consumption is higher.
