Rachida Brakni refuses the Legion of Honour: "The question of honour arises... Mine lies elsewhere."

Rachida Brakni will ultimately not receive the Legion of Honour. The actress and director was among the 619 individuals honored in the July 14, 2026, honours list, alongside Natalie Portman, Christine Lagarde, Pierre Arditi, Richard Malka, and Eva Jospin, among others. A few hours after the official announcement, she revealed that she was refusing the distinction. In a lengthy message posted on Instagram, the artist explained that she learned of the nomination with astonishment and announced that she preferred to decline it : “I am surprised to learn that I have been awarded the Legion of Honour. Regardless of the fact that it is handed out indiscriminately, for better and often for worse, the question of honour arises… Mine lies elsewhere.”

"Honor is a precious moral duty."

Rachida Brakni then elaborates on the reasons for her refusal. For her, honor is not simply an official decoration, but rather a daily personal commitment : "Honor is a precious moral duty that I humbly strive to apply every day in my work, my writing, and the choices that guide me, without which I would lose myself and without which I would lose the esteem of those who matter to me more than the highest distinction."

A Bastille Day promotion marked by several prominent figures

The 2026 class of the Legion of Honor includes 619 recipients. Among them are Natalie Portman, Christine Lagarde, Pierre Arditi, Richard Malka, Frank Lebœuf, Eva Jospin, and numerous other prominent figures from the worlds of culture, science, institutions, and sports. Rachida Brakni was expected to join this list but chose not to accept the distinction. Her announcement quickly sparked numerous reactions on social media. Several cultural figures publicly praised her decision. Guillaume de Tonquédec, Emma de Caunes, Shirine Boutella, Benjamin Biolay, and Imany were also among those who expressed their support for the actress. This refusal places Rachida Brakni among the rare individuals who have chosen to decline the Legion of Honor, an exceptional decision that raises questions about the symbolic significance of France's highest honor.
