The British actor puts an end to a rumor that has followed him for years. For Idris Elba, the idea of him playing 007 was never realistic, particularly because a portion of the international public would not accept a black James Bond.
A rumor that didn't hold water, according to him.
Idris Elba has clearly closed the door on James Bond. Long considered a possible successor to Daniel Craig, the British actor insists he never seriously considered the role. At 53, he explains that the idea flattered him, but that it never represented a concrete possibility for the franchise. The actor believes that James Bond was conceived in a certain way and that the character remains tied to a deeply ingrained image in the public imagination. For him, "The public would not accept a black actor."
“Certain markets” would not follow
Idris Elba asserts that some audiences would not accept a Black actor, and more specifically an African actor, in the role of Bond. He cites international markets where this version of the character would not align with the cultural expectations of some viewers. For him, the James Bond franchise is global, and not all audiences would react the same way to such a change. The actor therefore does not present his retirement as simply a matter of age or timing. He explains that the role, as it exists in popular culture, remains governed by very specific codes. According to him, these codes make the arrival of a Black Bond in the classic format of the saga unlikely.
Bond must remain Bond, says Elba
Idris Elba also emphasizes the nature of the character. For him, James Bond is first and foremost about fantasy, entertainment, and escapism. He doesn't want to see the franchise altered solely to meet a current political or cultural expectation. He summarizes this position by calling for an end to attempts to make Bond "woke"but to preserve what makes up the character's identity. This statement contrasts sharply with years of speculation surrounding his name. Idris Elba was often presented as a credible candidate by some members of the public and the media, but he now reiterates that he was never truly in the running.
The question of who will succeed Daniel Craig remains open.
Daniel Craig left the role after Dying can waitReleased in 2021, the question of his successor has remained one of the most closely watched issues in the film industry ever since. No new actor has yet been officially announced to portray 007. The next chapter of the franchise is now being spearheaded by Amazon MGM Studios.
