Alec Baldwin wants to retire after the Rust tragedy

Alec Baldwin reignited speculation about his future by explaining, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, which he no longer really wanted to work on and which he now aspired to "to retire" to stay home with his children. The 68-year-old actor made these remarks while reflecting on the years following the tragedy that occurred in 2021 on the set of Peace, where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot.

A life centered around his home

In this interview, Alec Baldwin describes a period of nearly three and a half years during which he worked very little and gradually became accustomed to a life centered on his home. Married to Hilaria Baldwin, with whom he is raising seven children, he explains that this long hiatus from film sets profoundly changed his relationship with the profession.

Peacea tragedy still fresh in everyone's minds

As a reminder, in October 2021, Alec Baldwin was holding the gun used as a prop when a shot killed Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza. Charged with involuntary manslaughter, the actor saw the criminal proceedings halted in July 2024 when a New Mexico judge dismissed the case due to prejudice, ruling that sufficient evidence had been presented by the prosecution and the police.

According to his own account, the legal and media fallout from the case impacted his health, family life, and desire to return to work. Baldwin also explained that he found himself forced to end Peace as part of the agreement reached with Halyna Hutchins' husband, while experiencing this reshoot as an additional ordeal. The film was eventually completed and released in 2025.
