Wim Wenders removes a controversial scene 50 years later

German director Wim Wenders has announced the definitive removal of a scene from his 1975 film Wrong Move, in which actress Nastassja Kinski appeared partially nude when she was only 13 years old, ending more than a decade of efforts by the actress to obtain this change.

A decade of unanswered requests

In a joint statement published in late July on the Wim Wenders Foundation website, the 80-year-old filmmaker indicated that he had apologized to Nastassja Kinski and granted her wish to cut the scene she had contested for over ten years. At the end of May, the actress, now 65, explained in an interview with the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung that she had tried unsuccessfully for fifteen years to persuade the director to alter the film.

In early June, Wim Wenders initially announced the temporary withdrawal of the entire film, acknowledging that Nastassja Kinski should have been better protected at the time of filming, before the two artists finally reached this agreement allowing the film to continue to exist, rid of the controversial scene.

An ongoing dialogue with German film institutions

The Wim Wenders Foundation, which holds the film's distribution rights, clarified that the new version was made available to Nastassja Kinski so that she could review it before its release. Both artists expressed their hope that the film's legacy would no longer be tarnished by this conflict, and that their long-standing friendship would be restored.

The foundation had also announced its intention to engage in a broader dialogue with German film institutions regarding the treatment of controversial 20th-century works, a reflection that must now continue beyond the sole case of Faux Mouvement.
