Steven Spielberg returns to aliens with "Disclosure Day"

Steven Spielberg returns to familiar territory. At nearly 80 years old, the American director releases "Disclosure Day," a science fiction film centered on extraterrestrials and the revelation of their existence to humanity. Emily Blunt plays the lead role alongside Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. The screenplay, written by David Koepp from a story by Spielberg himself, poses a simple question: what would happen if we were finally proven that we are not alone in the universe? The film was released on Wednesday, June 10th in the United Kingdom and will be released on Friday, June 12th in the United States, distributed by Universal Pictures.

A whirlwind film shoot between two continents

The project took shape quickly. Announced in April 2024 as Spielberg's next film, it was shot between February and May 2025 in Atlanta, New Jersey, and New York. After a Paris premiere at the Grand Rex on June 2nd, "Disclosure Day" received generally positive reviews. The film revisits themes dear to the filmmaker, those that have contributed to his success for four decades. Spielberg once again explores the fascination with visitors from elsewhere, in a style that draws as much from his own past as from current events.

The film's tone oscillates between tension and revelation. "People have a right to the truth," declares one of the characters. This truth belongs to seven billion humans, and every second brings humanity closer to the inevitable: the day everything will be revealed. Emily Blunt takes on the role of messenger between two worlds, that of humans and that of aliens. Spielberg thus marks a return to his roots, forty years after making his mark on science fiction cinema with his early works about extraterrestrial contact.
