Israeli director Nadav Lapid withdraws from FID Marseille following calls for a boycott

Israeli director Nadav Lapid has announced his withdrawal from the Marseille International Film Festival (FID), scheduled for July 7-12, following calls for a boycott from several filmmakers opposed to his participation. A renowned figure in contemporary auteur cinema, Lapid was slated to serve on the jury of this 37th edition, present one of his films, and participate in a discussion about his work.

Although based in France for several years, Nadav Lapid is known for his regular criticism of Benjamin Netanyahu's Israeli government and the war waged in Gaza since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. Despite these stances, his presence at the festival has sparked protests from some in the film industry.

A controversy that has intensified

According to the management of FID Marseille, an initial wave of protest emerged among some of the selected filmmakers. Faced with this situation, the organizers and Nadav Lapid had initially agreed that he would relinquish his role as a juror in order to maintain the screening of his film. The Policeman as well as the planned meeting with the public.

But the protest then spread to the events themselves. Faced with the scale of the controversy and to avoid further damaging the festival, the filmmaker ultimately decided to withdraw completely from the program.

The festival defends artistic freedom

In a statement, FID Marseille expressed its regret over the situation, arguing that it is unjustified to hold an artist responsible for the political decisions made by his government. The organizers noted that Nadav Lapid has been developing a critical perspective on Israeli society and the choices of its leaders for several years.

The festival management also affirms that artistic voices capable of questioning violence, conflicts and political excesses must be able to be heard, even when they provoke debate or controversy.

Several films removed from the program

Calls for a boycott led several filmmakers to withdraw their works from the selection. According to the festival, about ten films were removed from the program as a result of this mobilization.

While acknowledging each artist's right to withdraw their work, the organizers reaffirm their opposition to cultural boycotts. They believe that excluding a creator based on their nationality or origin undermines artistic dialogue and freedom of expression, values they consider central to the festival's mission.
