Australian police announced increased security measures around the Sydney Cricket Ground on the occasion of the fifth Test of Ashes, which begins on Sunday, a few weeks after a deadly armed attack in Bondi Beach.

On December 14, a father and son allegedly carried out a shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney's iconic beach, killing 15 people. The attack, the deadliest of its kind in Australia in nearly 30 years, deeply shocked the nation and reignited concerns about a rise in antisemitism.

In this context, the authorities of New South Wales authorities have decided to deploy a significant police presence for this highly anticipated match between Australia and England. Security around the stadium, located approximately five kilometers from Bondi Beach, will be provided by riot police, mounted officers, and officers armed with rifles.

This reinforcement is part of a broader strategy of increased vigilance in Sydney, the country's most populous city, in order to reassure the public and ensure the smooth running of one of the major sporting events on the Australian calendar.
