Martinique authorized to join CARICOM after a unanimous vote by the Assembly

The National Assembly unanimously adopted the bill authorizing Martinique's accession to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), marking the culmination of more than fifteen years of negotiations. The text, already approved by the Senate in January, was passed without amendment by the 31 members present. Only its promulgation now remains to make this accession fully effective.

This decision ratifies the agreement signed in February 2025 in Barbados between France and the regional organization. Martinique thus becomes the seventh associate member of CARICOM, an organization founded in 1973 comprising fifteen member states and several associated territories.

A strategic turning point for regional integration

For the Martinican authorities, this accession represents a major step forward. It should strengthen economic, political, and cultural ties with neighboring countries, while giving the territory a more prominent role in its regional environment. The President of the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique, Serge Letchimy, sees it as an opportunity to engage in dialogue "on equal footing" with the Caribbean states.

The French government also highlights the opportunities opened up by this vote, which could facilitate the integration of other overseas territories into the region. The communities concerned will be able to participate in the work of CARICOM, access strategic information, and strengthen their capacity for action in an area that has become geopolitically sensitive.
