After more than a decade without a major discovery, the Philippines has identified a new natural gas reserve off the coast of the Palawan archipelago. The announcement, made by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., concerns an area near the Malampaya offshore field, a cornerstone of the country's energy supply, and could significantly boost national electricity production.
An energy and geopolitical issue
Initial assessments indicate an estimated volume of nearly 3 billion cubic meters, with significant daily production capacity. According to authorities, these resources would cover the electricity needs of several million households for a year in a country still heavily reliant on imported coal and regularly experiencing power outages.
This discovery comes at a sensitive regional time. Exploration activities had been frozen in recent years in certain maritime areas due to territorial disputes in the South China Sea. By reviving domestic gas production, Manila seeks to secure its energy independence while navigating a complex diplomatic environment.
