Severe flooding struck the island of Siau, north of Sulawesi, following exceptionally heavy rainfall. Four towns were submerged on Monday by a flash flood, killing at least 16 people, according to Indonesian authorities. Three residents are still missing and dozens were injured.
Significant damage and mass evacuations
The floodwaters swept away trees and enormous boulders, damaging numerous homes and public buildings and rendering some roads impassable. Approximately 700 people were urgently evacuated. Rescue efforts continue in hard-to-reach areas as the rainy season, particularly deadly this year, continues to batter the archipelago.
