On Friday, in Dromana, a small seaside town in the state of Victoria, traffic took an unexpected turn. A seal settled down on the road, calmly, and then fell asleep right in the middle of it. The kind of scene that, in a matter of seconds, transforms an ordinary road into a local curiosity.
On site, the police secured the area without disturbing the animal. Cones were placed around the pinniped, and a detour was set up to avoid any risk of collision. Motorists, meanwhile, had to contend with this living speed bump, both endearing and very real when approaching behind the wheel.
In the neighborhood, some call him Sammy. A local resident, Laura Ellen, says she spotted the seal and doesn't hide her surprise: "We don't know where we'll see him next." She adds, almost as if she were talking about a slightly eccentric neighbor: "He usually sleeps all day."
A detour imposed by Sammy, a local star with a mustache.
The matter was resolved quickly. Animal rescuers intervened to escort the seal back to the beach, away from the asphalt and bumpers. Once the animal was returned to its natural habitat, traffic resumed as if nothing had happened, leaving a little anecdote that locals will recount at the next barbecue.
One reminder remains, less whimsical but nonetheless important: the authorities of the State of Victoria emphasize that seals are frequently seen along this coast and that the public is not allowed to touch or feed them. The image is amusing, the rule less so. The line between spontaneous affection and respect for wildlife must remain clear.
Ultimately, this episode says something about those coastal areas where nature still holds sway, even against the well-oiled habits of drivers. A road, an animal, a few cones, and an entire neighborhood reorganizes itself. And the next time Sammy decides to lay his head somewhere else, Dromana already knows she'll have to adapt again.
