The octopus is making a spectacular comeback on the Breton coast after several decades of near-extinction. In some fish markets in Finistère, the cephalopod even became the most landed species in 2025.
This massive presence is gradually transforming the activity of local fishermen, who are now catching significant quantities of octopus off the coast of Brittany, particularly around the Molène archipelago.
A species now highly sought after
Octopuses are mainly caught using baited traps submerged at sea. Some trips yield several hundred kilos in just a few hours, making the cephalopod a significant new source of income for Breton fishermen.
Industry professionals also note that this species, known for its intelligence and adaptability, appears to be benefiting from warming waters and changes in the marine ecosystem in the Northeast Atlantic.
