Chad: Mahamat Idriss Déby pardons Succès Masra and eight other opposition members

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby on Friday granted pardons to nine opposition figures, including Succès Masra, former prime minister and leader of the Transformers party, who was serving a twenty-year prison sentence.

Succès Masra has regained his freedom. Sentenced to twenty years in prison for having, according to the Chadian authorities, provoked deadly intercommunal violence, the former prime minister had been incarcerated for more than a year when President Mahamat Idriss Déby signed his pardon on Friday, August 15.

Masra is the most well-known figure among the nine opposition figures affected by this presidential pardon. As head of the Transformers, the main opposition party in Chad, he was arrested amidst particularly high political and social tensions in the country.

This decision comes without any detailed official explanation being provided regarding the President's motivations. [TO BE VERIFIED — INCOMPLETE SOURCE]
