Doctors Without Borders announced on Monday, June 15, the dismissal of 18 employees working in Chad, sanctioned for serious misconduct. These dismissals follow an internal investigation launched in late 2024 after Sudanese refugees being cared for by the NGO in the east of the country made serious accusations of sexual exploitation and abuse. A total of 59 allegations were examined by the organization's staff.
59 allegations examined following witness testimonies
The alleged incidents involve women who fled the conflict in neighboring Sudan and were receiving humanitarian aid from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in refugee camps. The organization did not specify the exact nature of the assaults or the identities of the employees involved, but confirmed that disciplinary action was taken after verifying the testimonies gathered. Chad has been hosting tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees for several months, fleeing the civil war ravaging their country.
Yet another scandal for humanitarian aid
This scandal adds to the growing list of abuses committed by humanitarian staff in crisis situations. MSF, one of the world's leading emergency medical NGOs, has faced similar accusations in the past in other intervention contexts. The organization has not indicated whether legal action will be taken against those implicated.
