Libya: Drone attack sets fire to a fuel tank near Tripoli

A drone struck an oil refinery in Zawiya, about 47 kilometers west of Tripoli, triggering a major fire. Firefighters in western Libya were battling to contain the remaining hotspots on Tuesday.

The fire broke out after a drone strike on a large fuel tank located in the city of Zawiya, about 40 kilometers west of the Libyan capital. Rescue teams were mobilized to fight the flames, which required several hours of intervention.

Zawiya is home to one of the main oil facilities in the west of the country. This type of installation is a recurring target in a country fragmented between rival factions since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.

The exact circumstances of the attack and the identity of those responsible were not immediately clear. The extent of the material damage remains to be assessed.
