A drone struck a refinery in Zawiya, about 47 kilometers west of Tripoli, triggering a major fire. Firefighters in western Libya were battling to control the remaining flames on Tuesday.
The fire broke out following a drone strike on a large gasoline tank located in the city of Zawiya, approximately forty kilometers west of the Libyan capital. Rescue teams were mobilized to fight the flames, which required several hours of intervention.
Zawiya hosts one of the main oil infrastructures in the western part of the country. Such facilities have been recurring targets in a nation fragmented by rival factions since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
