Burkinabe football has just lost one of its former international players. Ben Aziz Zagré, a defender who wore the Stallions' jersey, passed away in the early hours of June 8, 2026, at 1:7 AM, at the young age of 27. The Burkinabe Football Federation confirmed the news of his death, specifying that the former player succumbed to knee cancer, which he had been battling for several months.
A career abruptly halted by illness
The player had been forced to prematurely end his career last summer, as illness left him no other choice but to hang up his boots. Ben Aziz Zagré had only earned one cap for the Burkina Faso national team, just over ten years ago, but his sudden death has hit the Burkinabé sporting world particularly hard.
The death of this young defender comes at a time when he could have pursued a long career. His battle with cancer was ultimately cut short. The Burkinabe football federation and community mourn today a player taken in the prime of his life by the disease.
