Activist Kemi Seba seeks asylum in South Africa after his arrest

Pan-Africanist influencer Kemi Seba has filed for asylum in South Africa after his arrest for illegal stay, his lawyer said Monday after his court appearance.

Subject to an arrest warrant issued by Benin for his alleged support of a coup attempt in December, he was placed in pretrial detention pending a bail hearing scheduled for April 29. His lawyers dispute the illegal immigration charges, stating that an asylum application is being processed.

A complex legal situation with international dimensions

Kemi Seba, whose real name is Stellio Gilles Robert Capo Chichi, has been living in South Africa for several months and is also at the center of other investigations, particularly those related to financial suspicions and international connections. Authorities are notably seeking to verify the authenticity of his documents and his legal status in the country.

A controversial figure in Pan-Africanism, stripped of his French citizenship in 2024, he has distinguished himself through his virulent positions against France and certain African governments. His arrest comes in a tense political climate, amid several investigations and accusations concerning his activities and public stances.
