Congo-Brazzaville: Denis Sassou-Nguesso sworn in for a fifth term after a landslide re-election

Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso was sworn in on Thursday, April 16, for a fifth consecutive term as head of Congo-Brazzaville, during a ceremony held at the Kintélé stadium in the northern suburbs of Brazzaville. Re-elected with 94,90% of the vote in the presidential election of March 15, the 82-year-old head of state has now been in power for more than four decades.

Before the members of the Constitutional Court, Denis Sassou-Nguesso swore to "respect and uphold the Constitution." His inauguration comes after the court rejected the appeal filed by opposition leader Dave Mafoula, contesting the election results.

In his speech, the president presented himself as the leader of all Congolese, calling for national unity and addressing himself particularly to the youth. He urged young people to commit themselves to the future of the country, emphasizing the importance of knowing and loving their nation. "What is done today anticipates the obligations and concerns you will face tomorrow," he declared.

Elected on a program entitled "Let's continue the march for development", Denis Sassou-Nguesso also invited citizens, especially young people, to show hard work and humility to support the progress of the country.

The ceremony took place in the presence of several African heads of state, including Presidents Paul Kagame and Félix Tshisekedi. It concluded with a military parade and air displays, before a large crowd gathered to witness the inauguration.
