Moroccan authorities have announced they have reinforced their measures to prevent further attempts at mass crossings into Ceuta. This decision comes after messages circulated claiming that the border between the Moroccan city of Fnideq and the Spanish enclave would be open on August 15, a public holiday in Spain.
The Moroccan Ministry of the Interior claims to have identified several anonymous posts encouraging irregular crossings into Ceuta and Melilla. Its spokesperson, Rachid El Khalfi, assures that all necessary measures have been taken to intercept individuals attempting to reach the two enclaves.
Several suspects arrested in Morocco
Moroccan authorities have announced the opening of legal proceedings against those relaying these calls. A group of individuals suspected of participating in their dissemination has been arrested and placed under investigation, according to a statement released by the official MAP news agency.
This mobilization comes after the arrival of approximately 72,000 people in Ceuta at the end of July. According to Madrid, nearly 70,000 have been returned to Morocco, while around 2,000 people, including more than a thousand unaccompanied minors, are believed to remain in the enclave. Death tolls vary between authorities and NGOs, but reports indicate several dozen deaths.
