A magnitude 5,3 earthquake struck northwestern Greece overnight Saturday to Sunday. The tremor, felt particularly in the Ioannina region of Epirus, caused no casualties, according to initial reports from authorities.
The earthquake occurred at approximately 03:32 GMT. Its epicenter was located near the town of Leptokarya, at a depth of approximately 14 kilometers, according to the Thessaloniki seismographic station.
Aftershocks and some disruptions
More than a dozen aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 2,5 to 4,6, were recorded in the hours following the main quake. Local authorities reported some rockfalls on the Egnatia highway, as well as power outages in some areas of the Ioannina region.
Power was gradually restored and no major damage was reported. Located on several geological fault lines in the eastern Mediterranean, Greece is regularly affected by earthquakes.
