Twelve years after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, renewed searches in the southern Indian Ocean have yielded no results. The Malaysian Ministry of Transport announced on Sunday, March 8, 2026, that the operation, launched in late December, had been called off without locating the aircraft's wreckage.

On March 8, 2014, a Boeing 777 flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing suddenly disappeared from radar with 239 people on board, including 227 passengers and 12 crew members. Despite several years of investigation and extensive search operations, neither the aircraft nor the black boxes have been found, making this case one of the greatest mysteries in civil aviation.

Research to be relaunched at the end of 2025

Following an agreement with Malaysia, the marine exploration company Ocean Infinity resumed the search on December 31, 2025, in an area of the southern Indian Ocean considered the most likely location for finding the aircraft. The mission was expected to last up to 55 days.

But according to Malaysian authorities, the active phase of the search ended on January 23, 2026, without any trace of the aircraft being found. The government has assured that it will continue to keep the families informed of any new information regarding the investigation.

The anger of the victims' families

The announcement sparked frustration among the passengers' families, particularly in China. In an open letter to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, several families denounced the lack of communication from the authorities.

They claim they have not received any updates on the progress of the search since mid-January and say they have remained without a response despite several attempts to contact the Malaysian Ministry of Transport.

The victims' families are now asking the government to extend the contract with Ocean Infinity to allow the search to continue. The Voice370 association, which represents several passenger families, has also called on the authorities to open the mission to other interested marine exploration companies.
