More than 70 people have died or are missing after a migrant boat capsized in the central Mediterranean, according to humanitarian organizations. The tragedy, which occurred off the coast of North Africa, has also claimed at least two confirmed lives, while the search continues for possible survivors.
According to NGOs involved in the rescue operations, the boat was carrying a large number of migrants when it capsized under circumstances that remain unclear. As is often the case on this route, the boat was likely overloaded and unsuitable for the crossing, which significantly increases the risk of sinking.
Rescue teams were alerted after the incident was reported, but the sea conditions and a lack of sufficient resources are complicating operations. The death toll remains provisional and could rise further, as many people are still missing.
This latest tragedy illustrates once again the extreme danger of the Central Mediterranean migration route, considered the deadliest in the world. Since 2014, tens of thousands of migrants have lost their lives trying to reach Europe.
The year 2026 is shaping up to be particularly tragic, with several hundred deaths or disappearances already recorded in just a few weeks. International organizations and NGOs are calling for strengthened search and rescue operations and the development of safe access routes to prevent the recurrence of such disasters.
