A shooting left at least five people dead on Monday in Stade, a town in Lower Saxony near Hamburg, in northern Germany. The shooting triggered a large-scale deployment of police and emergency services in the area of Dankersstraße. Several people were also injured.
The area is cordoned off, residents are being kept at a distance.
Law enforcement officers asked the public to avoid the area during the operation. The situation was initially described as evolving, with a secure perimeter established around the scene. Police later indicated that there was no longer any danger to the public.
Gunfire was reported at a youth center located on Dankersstraße. The facility reportedly houses, among other things, a mother-child unit. It is not yet known whether shots were also fired outside the building.
Two arrests after the tragedy
Two people suspected of involvement have been arrested. Initial reports indicated at least one suspect had been apprehended, before the operational report confirmed two arrests. The identities, ages, and exact relationship of the suspects to the victims have not been disclosed.
