Everest: Missing for six days, a Nepalese guide found alive, crawling towards base camp

A true miracle occurred on the slopes of Everest. Missing for six days and presumed dead, 30-year-old Nepalese guide Hillary Dawa Sherpa was found alive Thursday morning while attempting to reach base camp on the world's highest peak. According to rescuers, the mountaineer was crawling when he was spotted by a team cleaning up debris left by expeditions on the mountain.

An experienced mountaineer, Hillary Dawa Sherpa reached the summit of Everest on March 29th alongside British adventurer Chris Thrall. The following day, during the descent between Camp 4 and Camp 3, his climbing partner lost sight of him after the guide stopped to rest. "He told me to continue without him," Chris Thrall recounted in a video released after his disappearance.

A disappearance under extreme conditions

The British climber explained that he then encountered another climber in serious difficulty, suffering from frostbite and oxygen deprivation. Faced with this critical situation and particularly unstable weather, he had to make a difficult choice: retrace his steps to search for his companion or assist the stranded mountaineer. The extreme high-altitude conditions then complicated any search attempt.

Found alive against all odds, Hillary Dawa Sherpa was immediately evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu. His condition was not immediately specified. This extraordinary story comes at the end of a record-breaking season on Everest, marked by more than a thousand ascents and an unprecedented number of permits issued by the Nepalese authorities. Despite this record number of climbers, five deaths have already been recorded this year on the slopes of the world's highest peak.
